Leo Varadkar has some surprising statements printed today (07/05/22) in the Irish Mail, page 6. When looked at in larger context, they could offer more insight to the values and agenda of a man, increasingly more people want to see the back of -and that’s just many fellow party members, to begin with.
.
“I’m staying in power to keep Sinn Fein out” Leo is quoted as saying. If true, at the very least, like Michael Martin, he’s also operating double standards. For a Northern Ireland government both Martin and Leo openly espouse that Sinn Fein are government material – and as such, should be joined in coalition with others. Would Leo and Martin say this if they thought Sinn Fein was bad for a Northern Ireland government?
.
Down South of the border, on the other hand where Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are getting their own mega pay, perks and pensions as they hold office, modern Sinn Fein is supposedly the devil incarnate – not to be paradoxically entered into any government – and by words of leaders, not into any coalition if they can help it!
.
Double standards much?
.
…Then there is another aspect of his statement? He’s personally staying in power to keep out another party? Hang on! Who gave him the power to dictator decide for the rest of the country?
.
In accuracy, his constituency voted him in (eventually in 5th count needed) to represent his area as a TD. His party with an eventual coalition number, then held a majority Dail quota. His agenda regarding Sinn Fein then became Fine Gael agenda? When did that democratic decision take place by member vote or was it just a case of Leo – dictator style – just undemocratic impose his own agenda on the rest of the party, using it too as a means to his own end?
.
So much for democracy? This is before we even get to the ramming of Ireland people into #PESCO, #JobPath (and similar), trying to ram us into #NATO, trying to ram us into #CETA, soon to ram us into a WHO treaty and more – even seeing their own members bulled to the point of quitting – and Fine Gael/Leo then says they are the party of justice and democracy?
.
Really? Actions speak louder than words Leo.

Part two.
.
Leo Varadkar has some surprising statements printed today (07/05/22) in the Irish Mail, page 6. When looked at in larger context, they could offer more insight to the values and agenda of a man, increasingly more people want to see the back of.
.
“He said Fine Gael would go into government only as a last resort” Most people would read that and move on without really analysing it. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the Irish constitution laid down that the people of Ireland gets to decide who gets into government – by lack of votes placed in support, who doesn’t! I’m open to be told I’m wrong.
.
Again, open to be told I’m wrong, I thought future party decisions/agenda come about by even an inner democratic, member vote process. I mention this in connection with history and background information that’s out there – but not widely acknowledged enough…
.
When Fine Gael lost 12 seats in the 2020 general election, Mr Varadkar said he would lead his party into opposition after it being already nine years in power. There was even the admission that “Some in Fine Gael want to go into opposition”.
.
Taking all this together, subsequently raises a question. If Leo thought that post general election 2020, Fine Gael would go into government as “last resort” – who got to decide what that “last resort” was to be? Did Leo as appointed leader, self adopt what Fine Gael’s “last resort” should be – or did he put a “last resort” to member vote? Who in fact, got to decide what that “last resort” should indeed be? A group of inner party people or just one person imposing their notions as then automatic party policy?
.
Yes, this sort of stuff is head wrecking at times, to think about – but fundamentally, we are talking about the use of democracy and how, though ‘grey areas’ that others in power could be seen to bend it to their will, a self-adopted agenda?
.
True democracy means that paths taken, future decisions taken, matters signed up to, have the (majority) consensus of the people all involved – not just the agenda and thoughts of one person imposed. The latter is usually judged to be a dictatorship.
.
Thank goodness then – as some big things crop-up – agreements, treaties, even state pressgang setups – for Ireland people and for their country, the citizens get to direct vote on such matters every time? You know, true democracy being allowed to occur? That would truly be a democratic government and country wouldn’t it!
.
Do we genuinely have that? Do we have true democracy under the thumb of the present government parties? Time to be honest with ourselves.
