I think most of us (open to be wrong) would like at some stage, a united Ireland. Is this going to happen any time soon? No. If and when it does, it should happen only with the consent of a democratic vote not only taken in by Ireland people but also by Norther Ireland people from all communities. Only right.
.
Fianna Fail and Fine Gael for PR reason alone, say they want a united Ireland when they are asked about such things. How can they say any different in truth! Fianna Fail in particular – yes, the “Republican party” – who put their “Republican” status once on posters for later PR purposes only, and over time even that print got smaller and smaller, have decided to ultimately drop that bit of party propaganda it seems – but you weren’t meant to cop this too.
.
They both still churn out “We’d like a united Ireland” when reluctantly confronted – but as regards actually making such inroads to see it come about? They not bothered at all to do anything. Why? They keep claiming “Now is not the right time to have that conversation!” – and to some extent it might be debated that there is some truth in this – but it might be debated that the “conversation” at least must begin somewhere? 10 years for now? Another 100?
.
They can and do, invent other excuses for doing absolutely bugger all in even creating any starter steps towards an eventual united Ireland …They quickly change the topic. It’s what they do these days.
.
…But why?
.
The answer is obvious – and when I state the obvious, I suspect you might agree.
.
Right now (as far as I know) Fine Gael does NOT have a registered legal presence in the North. Fianna Fail is officially registered as a party in Northern Ireland but have no active people or cumman’s up and running. I’m open to be wrong on parts of this but I believe it to be still true. Please tell me off if I am wrong.
.
Anyway, with no representation as such, if there was a united Ireland tomorrow, two sides of political thought would overall be represented. The unionist side and the nationalist/left side. The unionists would have their own mass number of people and parties. The nationalist/left side would be largely represented by one party overall, Sinn Fein.
.
So, whatever vote gains that FF/FG has (never mind Labour/Greens also) south of a current border, if there was a united Ireland, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael would go even quicker to being ‘a smaller fish in a bigger pond‘, than currently being ‘a larger fish in a smaller pond‘ of vote gains. Much to their horror, Sinn Fein would even more romp home! They can’t be having that. Christ NOOOO!
.
Votes they might gain under a whole united Ireland would be far more diluted/lost. The old parties CANNOT be having that. So, they are absolutely in NO RUSH to even start the legal stated, outlined processes as exists under the “Good Friday Agreement“. The only ‘conversations’ they will have about a united Ireland, is soundbite ones for RTE news and other biased media.
.
O’ yes, we would like to see a united Ireland (some day)” – it’s again good PR for votes – but just don’t hold your breath if you are actually waiting for them to even start stage one of the process. It’s quite simply NOT to their personal advantage, to see a united Ireland created. That’s a core truth. Now you know why they quietly are doing bugger all – on top of the PR excuses they do churn out for also doing bugger all.
